New national and regional bryophyte records, 48

2016

Andreaea rothii has been recorded for the first time in Croatia. It is a boreo-temperate suboceanic species (Hill et al., 2007) relatively rare in SE Europe, since it is known only from Romania (Ellis et al., 2014d), Slovenia and Serbia (Sabovljevic´ et al., 2008 ; Hodgetts, 2015). The species was found in the Papuk Mountains, situated in the mainly lowland area of NE Croatia. In this region Papuk is the largest and highest mountain range, with peaks between 800 and 900 m a.s.l. They are characterized by high geological diversity dominated by metamorphic rocks, such as different types of schists, as well as granites. The climate is temperate, moderately warm without an explicit dry period. …

Influence of pre-fermentative addition of aqueous solution tannins extracted from oak wood (Quercus petraea) on the composition of Grillo wines

2021

AbstractIn this research, the chemical characterization of fixed and volatile compounds of two different tannins in aqueous solution (Pratiko® L-Harvest and L-Fruit) extracted from oak wood, has been studied. The influence of the above tannins, at different concentrations, on the alcoholic fermentation kinetics and on the composition and sensorial characteristics of a white wine were then evaluated. The wines added tannins in aqueous solution compared to control wines showed significant differences in fixed compounds (colloids, polyphenols and ellagitannins) and volatile compounds (phenolic aldehydes, volatile phenols, furanic and piranic compounds). The differences of aqueous solution tann…

The combined effects of CO2, ozone and drought on rubisco and nitrogen metabolism of young oak trees (Quercus petraea) A phytotron study

1998

Abstract In this phytotron experiment we investigated the influence of increased CO 2 , O 3 and drought on the content of soluble proteins and some enzymes of carbon and nitrogen metabolism. We found that the amounts of soluble proteins and the large subunit of the rubisco per fresh weight in young oak leaves declined under conditions of increasing levels of CO 2 and after temporary water stress. The activities of nitrite reductase and glutamine synthetase were reduced when O 3 and CO 2 levels were raised.

Modelling dendro-anthracological parameters with dendrochronological reference datasets: interrogating the applicability of anthraco-typology to asse…

2020

International audience; Aleppo pine (Pinus halepensis Miller) is present in the palaeoenvironmental records of Mallorca (Balearic Islands, Western Mediterranean) since the Early Holocene. It is also documented in the archaeological charcoal analysis (aka anthracology) of early prehistoric sites, but it was especially exploited at certain sites during the Late Iron Age. However, different woodland exploitation strategies cannot be deciphered purely through the taxonomical identification of charcoal fragments, so it is difficult to assess if the presence of Aleppo pine in archaeological assemblages is due to specific social management strategies (branches and/or trunks exploitation). Anthraco…

The combined effect of CO2, ozone, and drought on the radical scavenging system of young oak trees (Quercus petraea) — A phytothron study

1998

In order to study the combined effects of CO 2 , ozone, and drought, we simulated in a controlled environment the climatic conditions of a German oak stand with high ozone (daytime: 80 ppb, control: 20 ppb) during one vegetative period under a regime of low and high CO 2 concentration (370 vs 720 ppm) and drought (4 weeks < -800 hPa). To investigate the effects of CO 2 , ozone and drought on the radical scavenging system, we monitored the level of glutathione, ascorbate, and α-tocopherol. However, it is important that, under the regime of elevated CO 2 , the antioxidative behaviour of glutathione and ascorbate appears to be masked by their function as storage molecules for sulfur or carbon.

Short-term response to waterlogging in Quercus petraea and Quercus robur: A study of the root hydraulic responses and the transcriptional pattern of …

2015

International audience; We characterized the short-term response to waterlogging in Quercus petraea (Matt.) Liebl. and Quercus robur L. as the initial response towards their known long-term differences in tolerance to waterlogging. One-month old seedlings were subjected to hypoxic stress and leaf gas exchange, shoot water potential (Psi(s)) and root hydraulic conductivity (Lp(r)) were measured. In parallel, the expression of nine aquaporins (AQPs) along the primary root was analysed by quantitative RT-PCR. Results showed a similar reduction in net assimilation (A) and stomatal conductance (g(s)) for the two species. Notably, the response of Lpr differed temporally between the two species. Q…

Expressing forest origins in the chemical composition of cooperage oak woods and corresponding wines by using FTICR-MS.

2008

A non-targeted, ultra-high-resolution mass spectrometric, direct analysis of oak-wood extracts from two species (Quercus robur L. and Quercus petraea Liebl.) from three French forests, and of a wine aged in barrels derived therefrom has been performed to identify families of metabolites that could discriminate both the species and the geographical origin of woods. From 12 T ultra-high-resolution Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectra of wood extracts, hundreds of mass signals were identified as possible significant biomarkers of the two species, with phenolic and carbohydrate moieties leading the differentiation between Q. robur and Q. petraea, respectively, as corroborated …

The Coastal Levantine Area

2017

The Coastal Levantine area is a very diverse territory situated between the Cap de Creus and the Cap de la Nau. The wide variety of environments and ecological conditions that occur in this area determine its great diversity and richness from the vegetation point of view. Forest composition depends mainly on climatic factors, geomorphology and soil features, and are currently dominated by evergreen sclerophyllous (Quercus ilex, Q. rotundifolia, Q. suber), conifer (Pinus halepensis, P. pinaster, P. pinea, P. salzmannii, P. sylvestris), and deciduous (Fagus sylvatica, Quercus petraea) and semi-deciduous (Quercus faginea, Q. canariensis, Q. pubescens, Q. pyrenaica) species in inland areas with…
